Prepare for the bad news: Why the EU may be minded to accept Theresa May’s Chequers Brexit Plan
Professor Richard Tuck, the Frank G. Thomson Professor of Government at Harvard University, tells B4B why he is a pessimist and believes after all the months of negotiations on Brexit the EU may be minded to sign up to Theresa May’s much criticised Chequers Brexit Plan, despite all the ministerial resignations.
In this exclusive interview Professor Tuck tells us:
I may be being over pessimistic but as I said I think it is almost impossible to believe that she would not have squared them with the EU before going into this. Would you? There has been a huge amount of negotiations at least about principles ever since we triggered Article 50, and I think this is the outcome of that covert negotiation.”
Professor Tuck also reflects on his earlier blog with us on why it is not the Conservative Brexiteers who have been out-manoeuvred by the Chequers Brexit Deal but the Corbynite Left. He warns: “They are hamstrung by the vaguely pro-EU sentiment in the rest of the Labour Party, and will not be in any position to oppose this aspect of some future deal with the EU.
